31 Lifelong Lessons I Learned From My Internship

This past summer I interned at Thirty-One Gifts in New Albany, Ohio. This experience was rewarding in so many ways, from the people I met, the projects I worked on, and the memories I made. I gained so many technical design skills, tips on becoming a “real adult” working professional, and so much more. However, some of the things that will stick with me for years to come where pieces of advice from the executives and leaders at Thirty-One. Below is a list of 31 things that I learned during my time at Thirty-One. 

  1. the first five years are the hardest

  2. good ideas come from everywhere

  3. no one controls your career like you do

  4. give yourself grace

  5. don’t take yourself too seriously

  6. never stay comfortable

  7. thank you notes are important

  8. maximize your strengths and learn to manage your weaknesses

  9. think in depth about each opportunity

  10. you’re never too old to hustle

  11. always answer the phone even if you don’t feel confident in knowing the answer

  12. observation is a big key to being successful

  13. find a company that mirror your values

  14. stay flexible

  15. be open minded

  16. work on one thing at a time and master it before moving onto the next

  17. don’t let your self doubt control you. use it as a fuel

  18. ask why

  19. practice good listening, like really listen

  20. build relationships

  21. stay curious

  22. embrace challenges

  23. always give more than one solution to a problem

  24. travel as much and as often as you can

  25. your why matters

  26. work some place that makes you feel important

  27. know that you have value

  28. It’s ok to not know what’s going on but don’t let other people know it

  29. where you work and who you work with matters

  30. have lunch with the people who ask you on the first day because they might become good friends

  31. and lastly, if you’re choking and alone…run into the table. thanks to my intern pals for that one :)
