31 Lifelong Lessons I Learned From My Internship
This past summer I interned at Thirty-One Gifts in New Albany, Ohio. This experience was rewarding in so many ways, from the people I met, the projects I worked on, and the memories I made. I gained so many technical design skills, tips on becoming a “real adult” working professional, and so much more. However, some of the things that will stick with me for years to come where pieces of advice from the executives and leaders at Thirty-One. Below is a list of 31 things that I learned during my time at Thirty-One.
the first five years are the hardest
good ideas come from everywhere
no one controls your career like you do
give yourself grace
don’t take yourself too seriously
never stay comfortable
thank you notes are important
maximize your strengths and learn to manage your weaknesses
think in depth about each opportunity
you’re never too old to hustle
always answer the phone even if you don’t feel confident in knowing the answer
observation is a big key to being successful
find a company that mirror your values
stay flexible
be open minded
work on one thing at a time and master it before moving onto the next
don’t let your self doubt control you. use it as a fuel
ask why
practice good listening, like really listen
build relationships
stay curious
embrace challenges
always give more than one solution to a problem
travel as much and as often as you can
your why matters
work some place that makes you feel important
know that you have value
It’s ok to not know what’s going on but don’t let other people know it
where you work and who you work with matters
have lunch with the people who ask you on the first day because they might become good friends
and lastly, if you’re choking and alone…run into the table. thanks to my intern pals for that one :)
Thank you Thirty-One for an absolutely amazing summer full of incredible people, projects, and endless opportunities.
